Why did we need Voice Mode?
Make shopping effortless: Voice makes it quicker to find products without typing. Already, over 30% of online shoppers say they prefer voice search for convenience.
Keep up with how people shop: The global voice commerce market is projected to cross $80 billion by 2026, showing that users are adopting it fast.
Reach new customers: Voice helps brands connect with people who are multitasking, on the go, or not comfortable typing long queries.
Boost engagement: A natural conversation feels more personal than filters and drop-downs, making users stick around longer.
Stay competitive: Giants like Amazon and Walmart are already investing in voice shopping — not having it could mean missing out.
Mapping the Voice Landscape

Before designing Echoo’s Voice Mode, I wanted to understand how people experience voice-based interfaces today. I studied popular conversational systems across industries — from ChatGPT and Gemini to Alexa and Walmart’s voice-enabled shopping — to see how they visualize interaction, respond to intent, and communicate personality.
Based on this, I set these primary goals for our Voice Mode:

Can you help me compare Product A to Product B?
These interfaces use large, breathing visuals or ambient animations that respond to voice input in real time. The design often occupies the full screen, creating a cinematic “AI presence” — great for immersion, but sometimes distracting for task-based use cases.
Here, transcripts or captions take center stage, often filling the screen as the user speaks. It supports accessibility and clarity but can feel dense and less personal.
These interfaces stick to traditional chat layouts with smaller voice elements — a mic icon, waveform, or speech bubble — blending text and voice seamlessly. It feels familiar, but lacks the sensory feedback that makes voice feel alive.
Across all these visual languages, we saw an opportunity:
Voice doesn’t need to feel either functional or flashy — it can feel human.
For Echoo’s Voice Mode, we envisioned an interface that reacts subtly like a living assistant — with gentle 3D sound waves, context-aware product visuals, and text overlays that fade in rhythmically with speech.
Make the voice responses feel less robotic, more humanlike (tone, pauses, expressiveness).
Let users interject while the system is speaking (e.g. “Wait, also…”), enabling a more fluid conversation.
Users should always know whether the system is listening, processing, or speaking.
Speech recognition should perform well in noisy settings or with varied accents.
Match or exceed what Gemini Live, ChatGPT Advanced Voice, etc., are doing.

At this stage, our focus was on mapping the sensory journey of Voice Mode — how users discover, activate, and interpret feedback from the assistant. These low-fidelity explorations helped us test different touchpoints that make the experience intuitive and emotionally engaging.

The icon needed to feel familiar, not futuristic, something users could spot intuitively in under 2 seconds.
We realized users don’t just listen — they watch. A rhythmic pulse, inspired by natural breathing, gave reassurance that the system was actively listening without being intrusive.
Color became the bridge between machine states and human emotion, reinforcing who’s speaking, while keeping the screen calm, minimal, and visually inclusive.
Unlike traditional assistants that isolate voice from UI, our approach fused conversation with data — enabling visual grounding, instant comparison, and continuity between spoken and on-screen interactions.
This bridge from voice to persistent text made users feel in control. It gave the conversation a tangible endpoint — a soft landing rather than an abrupt silence.

Learnings & Possibilities
Based on early user tests and behavioral insights, 80% of participants preferred speaking their needs over manually typing filters or scrolling through long product lists.
When users were guided through conversational prompts (“Would you like to compare prices or specs?”), they reported faster decision-making by up to 40%.
In A/B prototypes, 92% found the dual-tone layout more legible and said it made the assistant feel alive yet composed.

The design process also highlighted opportunities beyond shopping — such as conversational discovery in travel, customer support, and personalized product storytelling.

This concept began as an exploration of how voice could simplify user journeys — but through research, ideation, and prototyping, it evolved into something bigger: a glimpse into how users could feel guided, understood, and empowered while shopping online.
